E-Participatory budgeting in Australia
Tiago Peixoto highlights an new initiative by Paul McLeay, an MP for the electoral district of Heathcote in Australia. As part of a new NSW Community Building Partnership, $300,000 will be invested into building local community projects in every electoral district. Mr McLeay is seeking the recommendations of his electorate on which ideas are suitable for funding and which should be prioritised. Citizens of his electorate will be able to vote, through the internet, for the ideas they wish to see funded.
As Tiago notes, this form of e-participatory budgeting is all about "leveraging the dispersed knowledge of citizens to shape decisions that invariably affect their lives".
